Welcome to Alyssa Lloyd

I’ve always loved getting dressed up but if you told me 5 years ago I’d be starting my own slow fashion label, I’d have thought you were crazy. My life-long love of clothing grew into a passion for making it about 7 years ago, when a sewing machine, and the intense desire to create entered my life.

Over the next few years I taught myself to sew, taking on more and more challenging projects as my confidence as a seamstress and designer grew. Eventually, after a few years of deciding whether or not to enroll in fashion school, an opportunity to delve into a new and exciting career presented itself. Fueled by overseas travel, which inspired me to create value and meaning in my life, as well as a healthy dose of support from friends and family and the opportunity to spend several months working under one of New Zealand’s most well known fashion designers - the decision was made and Alyssa Lloyd was born.

Three principles guide the way our clothing is designed and produced:

  • Slow fashion for a fast paced life: I truly believe there’s nothing more satisfying and empowering than having a small but curated collection of items in your wardrobe that you know you can turn to time and time again. All garments at Alyssa Lloyd are designed with the principles of slow fashion in mind - they’re made of durable fabrics, designed to last and can be worn across styles and seasons. The concept of spontaneous elegance sits at the core of our collections as it speaks to the transformative power that beloved, flattering garments can have over the confidence of the women who wear them.

  • Lovingly and locally produced: All garments in our online store are designed, cut and sewn by me in my Auckland studio, meaning a lot of love and detail is put into every piece. Each item is quite literally handmade. As this brand continues to grow and develop we will continue to support the local garment industry ensuring the same level of care and attention is paid, while also keeping the important skills of clothing production in New Zealand.

  • Keeping sustainable and ethical principles at our core: It’s no secret the fashion industry is a harmful and wasteful one. But the tide is slowly turning with brands becoming transparent about their practices, allowing consumers to make conscious decisions about who to support. Being a small business means it's hard for me to have 100% transparency in my supply chain but for now Alyssa Lloyd is focused on choosing environmentally friendly fabrics, cutting down on waste in all areas of our business and creating beautiful, quality garments that will be worn with respect, cared for and treasured for years to come.

Through this blog I hope to share more about my business, our values, and this industry. So if you’re a fashion lover who cares about supporting an ethical and sustainable fashion industry consider subscribing to our newsletter or following us on social media, so we can keep the conversation going.
